Trading Card & Comic Book Overproduction: Why Bulk Storage Matters

15 years ago, Magic: The Gathering® entered its Twilight era with the release of Innistrad, a Gothic horror-themed set. That capped off what would be the fourth and final major Magic release of 2011. Over 1,360 unique cards in total were released that year.

Last year, we were treated to an eye-watering seven major sets—1,845 unique cards and heaps of supplementary products. (That includes Secret Lair, which added well over 100 limited-run drops in 2025 alone.)¹ Another seven full sets are slated through 2026. Similarly, the comic book market has exploded from $715 million in 2011 to $2.2 billion in 2025.^{2 3}

For game players and collectors alike, cardboard and comic stacks are growing faster than shelf space—and bulk trading card storage and comic book storage have become part of the hobby, not an afterthought.

How to Prevent Your Sports Cards from Bricking

Longtime collectors remember when sports cards started using a high-gloss protective coating in the early 1990s. This coating – known as UV coating – gave the cards like Fleer Ultra and Topps Stadium Club a slick, premium feel to them. Collectors loved it!. But this eventually led to a problem called “bricking.”

Bricking is when cards get stuck together in a stack resembling a brick. And once they brick, they are hard to unstick. Read on to learn why cards stick together, what to do if they brick, and how to prevent that from happening in the first place.

What Card Boxes Will Fit Best on Your Shelves?

If you have a large collection of sports or gaming cards, you likely have card boxes on your shelves. The IKEA-style shelves (pictured below) or wire rack shelves (pictured further below) are effective solutions for card box storage.

So, what card boxes are best for your card collection? There are a few things to consider before you buy card boxes or shelves. Will your cards be stored loose, in toploaders, in magnetics, or other card holders? Will you have any graded cards? How many cards are in your collection? Whatever the answer, BCW has card boxes to solve your storage needs.

Before you purchase card boxes, consider how they will fit on your shelves. We provided examples below to demonstrate how your boxes will look on IKEA or wire rack shelves. The wire shelves we used are 36 inches wide by 16 inches deep.
