What Size of Bags and Boards Do I Need to Protect my Comic Books?

While today’s comic books are normally 6 5/8″ wide by 10 3/16″ high (Current size), these dimensions were not always standardized. Throughout the history of comic books, publishers have made comics is different sizes (learn more from this article). For the purpose of bag and board sizes, BCW has simplified the sizes into three groups, or ages.

  1. Golden Age – circa 1938 to 1955
  2. Regular/Silver Age – circa 1956 to 1969
  3. Current/Modern Age – circa 1970 to present

To keep comic books preserved, they’re normally stored in bags with boards and you’ll want to get bags and boards sized appropriately for your collection. If you’re not sure what size of bags and boards you need, please measure your comics, and compare with the sizes listed below.

Protecting Your Booklet Cards

Booklet cards are hot for sports cards collectors! They are often extra thick with jersey patches and/or autographs. These cards can be stored in a closed format in a hinged or slider box, but most collectors like to store their booklets in the open position to get the full presentation. BCW offers sleeves, toploaders, and bags to enclose the toploaders (the bags can also enclose a magnetic booklet card holder). The supplies listed below are available for booklets in horizontal and vertical formats.

Is Polyester or Polypropylene the Right Choice for my Sleeves and Bags?

We make a simple distinction between bags and sleeves. We define the bags as having a flap that wraps over the top, while the sleeves are open on the top.

In many instances, such as comic bags, you can select bags made from polyester or polypropylene. Which material is best for your needs? There are several factors to consider to make the best choice.

Both polyester or polypropylene are considered archival-safe by the U.S. Library of Congress (learn more at the LOC page). The different chemistry between polyester or polypropylene gives them different attributes as sleeves and bags. BoPET (biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate) is a polyester film made from stretched PET (polyethylene terephthalate). BoPET is commonly called Mylar, the brand name of BoPET developed by the DuPont company. Polyester is inert and has no plasticizers or other chemicals that will damage collectible documents. Polyester is almost completely impermeable to liquids and gases. Polyester is transparent and does not yellow with age. Polyester film is the material of choice for archiving many of the United States’ most valuable historical documents according to the Library of Congress. Polypropylene is also archival safe, however it is gas permeable.

Polyester sleeves and bags are more rigid than polypropylene counterparts. This gives polyester bags a brilliant, shiny surface. Polyester bags are strong and unlikely to tear, while the flexibility of polypropylene bags may be a better solution for some needs.

If price is a consideration, polypropylene sleeves and bags are more cost effective than those made from polyester (Mylar). This makes polypropylene the popular choice for large collections.

For all of the bags and sleeves offered by BCW Supplies, we clearly define what material is used in its production. The description is found on the product’s respective webpage.

What’s Behind BCW Comic Book Backing Boards?

BCW comic book backing boards

If your goal is to preserve your comics for years to come or if you want to keep your comics in mint condition as an investment, BCW offers several methods to protect, store and display your comics. While there are more elaborate methods of storing comics, let’s focus on the most common method – bagging and boarding. The combination of bags and boards is a trusted method by collectors of comics and is a cost effective way to protect an entire collection. BCW offers bags made of polypropylene and Mylar. Both are acid free, archival quality materials. Let’s narrow our discussion even further to backing boards. To keep your comic books in mint condition, you don’t want any old cardboard stored with your comics. BCW backing boards have special qualities that make them ideal for preserving comics.

First, BCW offers backing boards in five main sizes: Modern, Current, Regular, Silver, and Golden Age comics. The Current Board is the most common size for today’s comics. Please see this chart to determine what size of backing boards is right for you.

Second, our boards are cut from 24 point stock. This heavy board weight provides a firm backing which resists warping and protects your comics while handling and storing these floppy collectibles.

Third, BCW backing boards are acid free. They get their white appearance from a bleached sulfate process which does not interact with your comics. While BCW backing boards are white, it is normal for the tint to slightly vary from various packs.

Lastly, the backing boards help preserve the comics by absorbing the residual acid that migrates from the comics. Most comic books have been printed on newsprint. This includes all comics printed prior to Modern Age, as well as some Modern Age comic books. This newsprint paper has been bleached with acid prior to printing, and some of the acid remains in the paper. As time passes, this acid will degrade the newsprint, affecting the quality of the paper and the inks. BCW boards have been buffered with calcium carbonate which neutralizes the acid that migrates from the comic. The coated side may be on one or both sides of the backing board. You can identify the coated side by the glossy finish of the board. When you insert your comic and board inside the bag, you’ll want the coated side of the board facing the comic. If the board is coated on both sides, either side will work great. It is recommended to replace the backing boards in your comic collection every three to five years to rid the acids that have migrated from the comics into the boards.

Of course there are other important considerations for preserving your comics. You will want to store them away from sunlight and in a cool, dry place because sunlight, heat, and moisture can directly damage the comics and accelerate the acid migration process, further damaging the comics. BCW offers several boxes and box dividers to help keep your comics safe and organized.
