How to Play Disney Lorcana

Disney Lorcana by Ravensburger is a game where two or more players summon various Disney heroes and villains to be the first to collect 20 pieces of lore. As the game takes place in an original setting, characters from many different properties can make an appearance, often in the same deck!

Various cards for Lorcana

The game uses 3 main types of cards: Characters, Items, and Actions. Characters collect Lore as well as challenge opposing characters. Items give access to powerful abilities. Actions are one-time effects that are discarded as soon as they’re resolved. Songs are a special type of action card that can be used for free by having a character “sing” it.

All cards have some common characteristics. In the upper left corner, there is a number representing the amount of Ink required to play the card. If there is a circle icon around the cost hex, that means the card can be placed in the Inkwell to pay for other cards. The card name is under the art, and on characters, subscript shows the character version, which is important for deck building. Below that are the card’s Ink type and classifications. Ink type is used as a deck building restriction, while classifications might be referenced by other card abilities. Finally, the text box contains the abilities the card has. Each has a name followed by an explanation of what it does. Some common abilities use bolded text, such as the Rush ability.

Characters also have 3 more attributes. On the like with the card name, there is a number in a circle, representing Strength, along with a shield indicating Willpower. These values represent how much damage the character deals in challenges and how much damage they take before being discarded respectively. Also, there will be one or more arrowhead-shaped icons along the left hand side of the text box. This shows how many lore points are gained when the character quests.

The first thing that happens is the Beginning Phase. In the following order, Ready every card that was exerted. Then, check for any effects that trigger at the start of your turn and resolve them. Finally, draw a card. If you can’t draw a card because you have an empty deck, you lose the game. The game moves to the Main Phase next. Once per turn, you can take a card from your hand, show it to your opponent, and place it facedown in your Inkwell. These will be used to help pay for other cards.

The rest of the Main Phase actions can be done as many times as you like. You can play a card from your hand, use a character ability that doesn’t cause the card to exert, use an item ability, or take an action using a character that’s been in play since the start of your turn. These actions include questing to gain Lore, challenging an opposing exerted character to damage them, or using a character ability that requires exerting them. More information on actions can be found in the Quick-Start Rules.

While the starter decks are playable out of the box, you may want to alter it to fit your style, or create a whole new deck! There are a few things to keep in mind when creating or editing a deck. First, decks must have at least 60 cards. Second, you can only use cards from 1 or 2 Ink types. Finally, you can only have 4 copies of a specific card. Different versions of the same character count as different cards. With that, you should be ready to begin your adventure!
