MHA Deck Tech – Ochaco II

My Hero Academia Cards in BCW Prime X 4 Gaming Box
Four MHA decks in a BCW Prime X4 Gaming Box

As one of the main characters in the anime and manga, Ochaco has been well represented in the game with cards that range from very good to meta defining. The character cards are very useful as well, but overall, Ochaco II may be the most overtly powerful of them. Featuring a free speed buff, a speed reduction, and the ability to remove a successful attack from your card pool, this version also has the second highest Health rating in the game currently.

The resources on this version are unusual for how the character is typically shown, specifically Death. This gives access to several powerful cards, as well as turning the low hand size into an asset. This is a deck with powerful attacks that make each block a difficult choice.

Gale Force Punch is a great opener. With it’s high speed, high damage, and powerful abilities, this is a great card to use Ochaco’s reaction on. Turn To Dust is another powerful card, forcing your opponent to choose between losing health or losing foundations. Merciless Rush will almost always get the difficulty reduction, and forces your rival to choose between damage or losing a foundation. Brutal Explosion is another potential source for foundation destruction, as well as punishing decks that like to flip foundations. Finally, Float Combo is a utility attack, and is a good target for the response ability as it will almost always do damage.

League Interview and First Day of Class have a similar purpose; making the first and second attacks of your turn easier to play, respectively. Since most of the attacks have the Fury keyword, Let’s Fight Bad Guys! will be able to boost almost everything you play. Apathetic is a good way to deal with an annoying foundation, as well as help trigger Brutal Explosion abilities. Latent Skill helps get around the small hand limit, turning dead cards into 2 new ones. Both Surviving The Final and In Danger are defense abilities, reducing the speed of a potentially game ending attack. While the Deadlock first enhance on Plus Ultra is great, the block ability is the main use of the card.

Ideally, you will play an attack, destroy an opposing foundation, do some damage, then repeat the attack. Any deck that cares about foundations, either in general or specific ones, will have trouble with this deck. However, if the deck isn’t concerned with having a lot of foundations, a lot threat is mitigated. Due to the small hand size and lack of free card draw, you cannot be fully aggressive until you feel you’re able to end the game. With that in mind, a deck with a larger hand size may be able to slowly whittle you down.

Between the resource destruction and heavy damage, this deck swings hard. Each block your opponent attempts comes with the potential for a heavy cost. And, with the new set coming soon, there will be more cards worth including, each designed to be as painful to your opponent as possible.
