Mowu, Loyal Companion EDH Deck Tech

Like many people, my involvement with Magic the Gathering is more or less limited to playing Commander. I also like to keep things as inexpensive as possible, and definitely skew to the more casual side of game play. These should be decks that perform decently, and offer a good starting point for your upgrades.

This deck wants to put +1/+1 counters on Mowu as possible, as Mowu gets a nice bonus from them. This along with Trample and Vigilance gives plenty of chances to get commander damage on your opponents.

Most of the creatures are expendable. Prized Unicorn is an exception, and is best used when an opponent has enough creatures to block and absorb all the damage Mowu could do. Artifacts and Auras are straightforward, for the most part they just add counters to Mowu with an extra side benefit.

Most of the spells add counters to Mowu, but the deck features ramp as well. As this is a mono-green deck, removal is in the form of fight effects. Outmuscle is a good one, as it will always get the Adamant effect of giving Indestructible. Soul’s Might and Invigorating Surge can be game winners, capable of adding many counters at once.

Lands are straightforward. Cave of Temptation is an easy way to put counters on Mowu. Karn’s Bastion should be using Proliferate each turn, especially if other, damaging counters are present on the field.

As stated earlier, the typical game plan is to get Mowu in play, protect him at all costs, and stack as many +1/+1 counters on him as possible. Equipment goes on Mowu as soon as possible.. After that, pick one player a turn and attack. You should be able to reach the required 21 commander damage easily, usually after one or two attacks. Expect Mowu to be targeted for removal often, as he gets big fairly quickly and is an obvious target.

As far as upgrades are concerned, Hardened Scales is an obvious choice. Avoid Fate can help keep Mowu in play a little longer. More fog effects will get around your lack of effective creatures if your local meta demands it. More protection is always nice, of course. You can find the deck list on Moxfield.

Overall, this is a simple Voltron-style deck. It’s also incredibly budget friendly, making it a good base to start from, or as an easy-to-use deck handy for new players to borrow. What improvements would you make? Let me know in the comments below.
