How to Store and Display Your Hockey Puck Collection?

Many puck collectors I know are the “all-in” type who purchase almost every unique puck they find and then put it on display with the hundreds of other pucks in their collection, usually in some custom-built display that costs a lot of money and takes up an entire wall. Me? I don’t have the space or the budget for that. I’m more of a casual puck collector. Card collecting is my favorite hobby, but it is hard for me to resist buying a hockey puck every now and then, be it from a special game or commemorative event, or with the logo of some long-gone team. And I love getting pucks signed by my favorite players; pucks look great when signed in silver Sharpie or silver paint pen, and it is a shame to not display those. The problem is that over time, all these pucks start to pile up, can take a lot of display space and be tricky to store without damaging them.

If you don’t want to dedicate an entire room, wall, or bookcase to display your hockey pucks, but still want to show off some of your favorites, consider putting just a few on display at a time and then rotating them every month or so. I like using the Acrylic 5 Hockey Puck Display because it puts the pucks in tiers – two in the front, three in the back – and staggers them so you can see the face of each puck. Plus, the clear acrylic top keeps the dust out. BCW also makes Puck Displays that hold one, two, three or four pucks, so you can use the displays that best fit the space you want to dedicate for showing off your collection.

Now, what to do with the pucks that aren’t on display? Don’t just throw them in a box and forget about them, as pucks will invariably rub against the inside of the box, scuffing their edges. More importantly, you want to protect the logo and graphics on the faces of the puck, which are susceptible to wear and scratches.

The best thing to do is to first put each puck in a square Puck Holder. These cost under a buck apiece, but are even cheaper by the dozen, and will keep your pucks from rubbing against surfaces or each other. Square Puck Holders are also stackable.

You can then fit up to 32 square Puck Holders into a Graded Shoe Box. Even though a Graded Shoe Box was designed for storing slabbed trading cards, it also works great for hockey pucks. You can neatly fit eight stacks of four Puck Holders in a Graded Shoe Box. The final touch is to put a foam Monster Pad in each row, which will keep the pucks from shifting when you move the box.

With just a little time and investment, you can keep your puck collection organized and in perfect condition.

  1. I’ve been to 12 outdoor NHL games and get souvenir game pucks, Blackhawks championship pucks, crystal pucks from, winterclassic, 2020 allstars crystal puck filled with melted ice.

  2. great idea for storage. Im 59 and have kept pucks from my youth through today. I started to keep only pucks I was involved in, usually NHL or OHL games I shot or watched but I was there…just too many otherwise.
