What Penny Sleeves Work For Thick Cards?

Anyone that participates in the card collecting hobby for any amount of time learns something very quickly: You can never have too many sleeves on hand. No matter what your end goal with a card may be, a standard sleeve will almost always be helpful. Another thing collectors learn is that different thicknesses of cards need different sleeves. However, if you don’t know the thickness of your cards, the BCW Card Thickness Gauge shows several common thicknesses. Download and print Card Thickness Gauge (PDF).

Penny Sleeves with Card Gauge

Standard Card Sleeves, nicknamed “penny sleeves” fit most cards. They easily hold cards from 10 pts. to 100 pts. in thickness. As a general rule, magnetic holders do not work with sleeves (although Pro-Mold has these mags designed for sleeved cards), so if you wish to use a card holder with them, an appropriate toploader must be used. Sleeved cards can also go directly into a storage box if you prefer.

Thick Card Sleeves with Toploaders

For thicker cards, use the Thick Card Sleeves. These work best for cards ranging between 100 pts. to 240 pts. Thick Card Sleeves also work to hold folded booklet cards if you prefer to store booklets in the closed position. Conversely, if you prefer to store booklets in the open position, see Booklet Sleeves and Toploaders.

Every collector needs sleeves and toploaders, and if you collect a variety of cards, a variety of supplies will help as well. This is true for everyone from the largest breakers to the smallest collector. Having a few packs of both types of sleeve, along with the card gauge, will help ensure you can always have the right protection at hand.
