FFTCG Deck Tech – Scions of the Seventh Dawn

One of the major draws of the Final Fantasy TCG is the ability to make decks based around your favorite games. Both casual and high-level players do this, with archetypes such as Avalanche hitting the top of the meta. This deck follows a similar theme, but at a lower level. In the lore of award-winning MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV, the Scions of the Seventh Dawn are a group players become associated with that seek to defend the realm of Eorzea against threats too strong for the Grand Companies to handle. In FFTCG, they form the core of a speedy deck that rewards playing as many Scions as possible. It performs best when keeping the opponent under constant pressure until you can create an opening and swarm in.

Spread of FFTCG cards with deck

The obvious centerpiece of the Forwards is The Oracle of Light (13-138S). Not only will your Scions gain +2000 each, but when she dies, she can put a Scion from your Break Zone into play dulled. Thancred (13-136S) can do direct damage to opposing forwards, and gets nice boosts whenever you play another Scion. while (5-107H) gets a buff as long as another Scion is in play. Alphinaud (8-092C) can remove an opponent’s ability to defend themselves from your attack if you boost his power enough. Yda (5-158S) is cheap to play and gets more power for each Scion you control. She also deals damage to a dulled forward when she attacks, potentially taking out 2 opposing forwards.

Momodi (5-094R) is a great utility backup, giving a forward the Brave ability once a turn. Louisoix (5-120C) can fetch either Alphinaud or Alisaie when entering play. The first choice should be Alisaie (5-161S), as she gives your Scions haste. The card is also cheaper to play if you control Alphinaud. Krile (XIV) (6-071H) works best as a cheap turn 1 play, but the ability might be useful depending on the matchup.

The deck makes use of searching for cards and break zone recursion. In addition to the aforementioned Louisoix, Papalymo (5-159S) searches for Yda and Minfilia (5-161S) searches for any Scion of the Seventh Dawn forward. While not as powerful, Urianger (13-135S) reveals the top 2 cards of your deck, letting you add one Category XIV card to your hand. In this deck, all but 6 cards match, making it very likely to get a card. The Oracle of Light can bring a Scion back into play, as can Y’shtola (13-134S). Minfilia (6-079L) lets you add 2 characters from the Break Zone to your hand.

The deck runs limited summons. Titan (1-110C) is used to prevent a character from being broken. This is useful for keeping important pieces in play, at least until you have the replacement in hand. Titan (6-075R) works best targeting your Alphinaud and your opponents biggest forward to maximize the number of characters dulled. Ramuh (7-103C) is included mainly to stave off potential attacks, hopefully giving you another turn to try to win.

Adding Y’shtola (12-119L) or (16-100L), perhaps both), can improve the deck significantly. The first reduces a forward’s power by 4000 for each Scion you have when entering play. The one-sided board wipe is great as well. The second is a cheap, fast attacker that will power through many blockers. Thancred (7-092C) dulls an opposing forward, and potentially can be powerful the turn it is played. Thancred (8-146S) is a backup that can give a Category XIV forward First Strike.

Scions is a popular and powerful deck that is more straightforward than other decks to play. It combines aggressive gameplay with the ability to find almost any tool when you need it. While this version of the deck isn’t the strongest, it is a solid base to build your own version on top of. It lacks many of the other Category or Job interactions that other decks rely on, making it great for newer or inexperienced players that want to use something that can be effective. The only real downside is many of the cards are starter exclusive and heavily played, making them more difficult to get hold of.
