How to Protect, Store, and Display Gaming Playmats

There are a few things every card gamer needs, regardless of their game of choice. Cards obviously, but also sleeves, a box or case, and perhaps some dice and tokens. Many players also use playmats to help protect their cards. Playmats are a common prize for tournaments and events, many being exclusive. In any case, the best way to store or display your playmats depends on your needs.

Playmat in BCW Playmat Tubes

At the most basic, a way to store and transport a playmat is needed. The BCW Playmat Tubes offer an easy, compact way to store most standard-sized playmats. The triangular cross-section prevents the tubes from rolling off the table. Each tube also comes with a pair of 6-sided dice.

For oversized playmats, you will need something larger. The BCW Poster Tube (or Poster Tube with Strap if you like convenience) fills this role. These work best for the table-sized playmats seen at game shops and conventions, but can also be used for many rpg battle mats.

Playmat Toploader with Hang Tags

If you have a special playmat you want to show off, we have you covered as well. You will need a few supplies. Namely, our 24 x 14 Playmat Toploader, some Hang Tags, and hanging hardware of choice. First, you will want to put the hang tags on the back of the toploader. We suggest 2, one at each of the upper corners. Next, measure the center of one hang tag (the tip of the triangle) to the same point on the other. Then, mark two spots on your wall using that length. Use these as references to insert the hanging hardware, making sure that it will be straight and level. If needed, adjust the position until you get it perfect. After that, it’s a simple matter of putting the hangers on the hardware. Double check to make sure the display is level.

Playmats Hanging on Wall

This system can be used to to display as many playmats as you have space for. It is very minimalist, which should work with almost any style. The main downside is the top of the holder is open, which can let dust in. If this is a concern, a strip of cellophane tape over the opening will be enough to keep dust and dirt out. You want to make sure the edge of the tape overlaps the front as little as possible, as you don’t want to distract from the view of the playmat itself.

Another way to display playmats is to use the same topload holders, but to have them on an open rack, such as a magazine or poster rack like above. This lets you show a lot of playmats in a small footprint, although you can only see one or two playmats at a time. Using this method at a shop would be better than using it at home. Customers can look at a larger selection without taking a lot of floor or wall space.

Keeping collections tidy and protected is vital, and this is no less true for playmats. No matter what your personal needs are, there are a variety of ways to help keep your playmats in the best shape possible. The only issue left is deciding which to display and which to use for game nights.
