In 2012, Paizo<\/a> released a product for the Pathfinder campaign setting titled Distant Worlds<\/em>, which described the other planets sharing the Pathfinder solar system. This mix of science fiction and fantasy paved the way for the release of Starfinder<\/a> in 2017. Taking place in the same universe as Pathfinder, it is designed to be compatible, with characters, creatures, and spells easily converted. The rules are similar, with additional components to more easily reflect the science fiction influence. The supplies needed for the game are essentially the same for Pathfinder; a set of polyhedral dice, a character sheet, and something to write with. The Beginner Box has the base elements to get you going, but of course there are several accessories to enhance your experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Sci Fi Player Folio<\/a> is useful for holding character sheets, along with 9-pocket pages to hold cards that are useful for in-game reference, such as the forthcoming spell cards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you bring several books, the Magazine Stor-Folio<\/a> will hold the Core Rulebook, along with a few supplements. I should point out while it will hold the pocket edition of the Core Rulebook, it is significantly smaller, and could have a chance of getting damaged. The Stor-Folio will hold the hardcover books without issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dice trays<\/a> are useful to keep your rolls confined to a specific area, perfect for small spaces or when using maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are several options for mats, the most common being map tiles or erasable mats. To store and transport a map, a playmat tube<\/a> or poster tube with convenient strap<\/a> are good options. If you use the folded map that comes in the Beginner Box, BCW offers a 24×30 Toploader<\/a> which will keep the mat flat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like most RPGs, Starfinder has combat, both personal and spaceship based in this case. Given the roots of the game, having miniatures for both will make things easier for everyone involved. A Prime X-4 <\/a>with foam support will not only hold minis, but also dice and any writing implements you need. As a bonus to GMs, the card slots can also hold items like Condition Cards<\/a> or the Critical Hit Deck<\/a>.
